Ever want to know how to soften brown sugar? Over time brown sugar will harden (even if it’s stored correctly) Here are a few ways you can salvage your brown sugar without going to the store and buying new!

The bread method

We recently tried this one so we know it works. It takes 2-3 days to accomplish.

Step 1: Take your brown sugar and put it in an airtight container (a jar, or better yet, a ziplock bag)

That’s it!

The Microwave Method

This is probably the case for most of us but if you open the cupboard and find that your brown sugar is hard and you need it right away it’s best to use the microwave method.

Step 1: Put the brown sugar in a microwave-safe bowl and cover it with a wet paper towel.
Step 2: Set the microwave to 2-3 minutes and hit start

Step 3: Every 20 seconds, remove the bowl and check the brown sugar, breaking down in chucks and continuing to stir. Once you reach the desired consistency, continue to stir occasionally while letting the sugar cool. Store the brown sugar in an airtight container!

Pro Tip: Don’t overheat in the microwave or you will be left with a hard ball of sugar (good for nothing!)

Conclusion

Brown sugar has a lifespan of about 2 years, but you can extend the product by storing it correctly (with Marshmallows, in an airtight container) and if you do find that your brown sugar has hardened, use the 2 methods listed above we hope we’ve answered the question of How To Soften Brown Sugar.

In the United Kingdom, a pint equals 0.57 liters, but in the United States, it equals 0.48 liters
